Well, actually, that is the squish area in a DSM head. I don't know how hip you are to squish but there are two flat areas in the DSM combustion chamber that are designed to "squish" the air/fuel charge and promote better combustion through increased turbulance and cooling . Squish is very big in the two stroke world but apart from Magnus http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/images/4g63piston.jpg , it is largely ignored in the sport-compact scene.
That being said, my friends in the know tell me that Singh's grooves do not work on high performance engines.
