I agree with 91AWDDSM- Being in Cali, you should probably be looking for something pre-smog if you wanna play with it. Maybe look around for an old Datsun 510 or early Corolla or Celica or something. '60s Rancheros and El Caminos can be had cheap, look around for something decent. AMCs are always fun too. Be creative, poke around Craigslist.

I'm so jealous you have the ability to grab any of those cars in your backyard, in the condition that they're in, for so damn cheap.

With the options listed, the '66 Impala gets my vote. But, it's more of a cruiser, than a "fun" car. But, as you stated, you got the EVO and even a boosted DD for that.

I was gonna say, you should be able to get an sr swapped 240 for that price out in cali... they seem to go for a lot more out here. You gotta watch those 240s though, they are insanely addictive and leave you broke in the end

Mustang would probably be fast and mullet-tastic.

Depends on what you want to use it for. I'm guessing if the $3k + $1k mods you're looking for a daily driver that's fun on the street? Or are you looking for something that's cheap and you can take to the track/autox/rallyx/dry lake bed and have some fun with?

If you're looking for RWD you can't go wrong with a BMW. A Miata would be fun for attacking mountain roads as well.

But I'd just say get some friends, build up a 24 hours of LeMons car, and go race it. Most fun you'll have for the dollar.

Audi 100- Cool, but FWD, difficult to find parts for. More of a cool old car than something really fun to drive.

I love the '71 BMW- but it's going to be an EXPENSIVE project. But probably rewarding in the end.

I like the idea of the Impala... but that kind of money for a 4-door is silly.

Obviously I like the Newport- it's a lower trim level of my 300, and a car I know a shitton about. You could build a 383 stroker and have some fun, you could learn a little bit about chassis and suspension set ups and actually make it handle (don't laugh, it's possible), etc. But I'd wait for a 300 or a better looking C-body for less money. They're too common to pay 4K for a Newport, which is the plainest and most common anyways.

The Dart would be a lot of fun... but in all likeliness the motor it has is a lame 273 or 318 (most likely a 273 2bbl). So you're not really gonna want the motor in it. Thankfully, smallblock engine swaps in those cars are super easy, and so is putting a 4-speed in (or if you wanted to spend the money, 5 and 6 speeds are available as bolt in kits). And there's a boatload you can do suspension and brakewise with those cars. You could make an A-body a force to be reckoned with on a track. And they make cool cruisers. I still want a '67-'69 Dart someday.

or (i have wanted to do this for a while)
buy a miata with a blown out drive train, find an 80's v8 thunderbird or cougar, and go to www.monstermiata.com
tho, the kit alone is $4k... dosnt leave much for the donnor cars..

I frequent out to Santa Clara for business trips. Several guys at work venture to used car lots looking for good deals. I haven't, but I know a few guys that have bought cars on the spot and had them shipped back to Michigan.

Don't know the prices of things in CA (can't look at craigslist at work) but you can still consider it a viable option. Buying cars sight unseen is always a risk but you could probably have the person drop the car off at a shop (pay them some money for their time) to get an inspection.

If the added assurance/inspection and shipping still come out to a fair price, go for it!
