    The *official* XS running thread

    Runners of XS UNITE!

Since you brought up running, I'll say that I'm trying to get back into the groove of things. I took the winter off, big mistake. Picked up weight and lost all my mojo I had last year.

Personal goal for this year: Run the 1/2 marathon at the Detroit Free Press Marathon. Not really sure I can get to that point, but it's a goal nonetheless.

I'm trying to keep up with the Nike+ stuff (using Adidas shoes though)
    http://nikeplus.nike.com/nikeplus/?l...nID,1411258201

I only get 1 run in a week right now. I am going to try a duathlon Saturday - super sprint: 2 mile run, 8 mile bike, 2 mile run. Come June there are more sprint duathlon (double the above distance), and some 5ks to shoot for.

I used the Nike + setup for a little while, it sucks. I could never get it to match up even remotely close with mapmyrun's mileage and I think they might be a bit more accurate.

I really want a Garmin Forerunner 405 with heart monitor but they're pricey.

I haz Forerunner 205, use it cycling as well..you can switch between sport modes. The running mode is nice, you can have it display your pace, which is nice to know.

Went to the gym after the dentist yesterday, only put in about 2.5miles with a numb face..heh....

I'm committed to the Detroit full marathon...yay...dunno how I'm going to get ready for that one.

Whoa.. full marathon eh? What's the longest you run right now?

I kind of imagine that I am going to need to be doing at least 15 miles on a regular basis to be ready for something like the half. Probably more. My problem is I don't have any speed at all.. I run SLOW .. like 12 minute miles. This year I plan on doing some Fartlek stuff on certain days. I'm just working my way back up to being used to running right now.

Maybe you could share some training tips? At the moment, running 1.5 miles feels so hard.. I miss the days where I could go out and bust out 5 miles easy. The farthest I've ever run is 8 miles so I have a lot of work ahead of me if I want to do a half.

I worry I'm being a bit over ambitious.

I'm no expert...lol...My max is about the same as yours....I just have a training program I'm going to follow :-/
You can do the half, EASY
You know as well as I do, a big percentage of it is mental.....I'd ask Bobbafettm.....Derek is pretty hardcore, I bet he has good advice..

I hope some of the guys who run a lot come in here and school this newb. I've been running a ton for the past 2 summers but never seem to make it into the winter. I basically throw away all my progress and then start fresh in the spring.. stupid move IMO.

My forerunner.... LOVE it...save up for one Brad...I'd put more confidence in one of these as far as accuracy goes than mapmyrun, or Nike+....
I compared mapmyrun to this, and the Garmin *seemed* more accurate, and the difference was about .5 miles.....

Can your Forerunner do heart rate? I really want to be able to check my heart rate to know I'm pushing hard enough or too hard. I know the 405 does it but it's like $399. The next purchase I make in that price range will be a bicycle.

No, but you can get a HRM for like 50 bucks....Although, the Garmin has SWEET software for logging all your runs and the specifics for each, like elevation, pace, distance, maps, and if yours has a HRM, will probably graph your HR along the run...

The 205 is like $150 bux now....http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/EP..._source=google $154, free shipping

Get a bike used PLENTY of good ones on CL...either that or post a WTB on www.mmba.org, bikes are like cars, value plummits the moment you pedal it out of the showroom.

I know Gabrielle got a timex HRM watch, with a chest band dealie for under 80 bucks at Target, and she uses it all the time.

    http://www.walgreens.com/store/produ...sku=sku3637070

Sure, 2 watches would be redundant, but you can get a 205 new for like 150, or cheaper, and the timex for 40 bux....

I've been lurking on MMBA for the past 2 days. If only I didn't need a Large or XL frame.. damn long legs. Everyone has Medium framed bikes for sale.

The only XL frame bike I can find on CL right now is a Haro Impasse which I can find nothing about.

Here's a question for the runners. What's your routine to start your running say, on a typical day. Do you do any stretches? Do you walk a bit before running? Or do you just head straight out the door and run immediately?

On the treadmill I walk a bit first....Outside I'll walk 3-4 houses down, then start running....although, I'm paranoid about injuring myself, and if I feel a muscle start to tighten up a few miles in (which has been fairly rare) I'll stop and stretch it. This could probably be avoided by stretching pre-run lol. Derek?

I always tend to stretch my calves and quads before going out the door. But on the days where I don't stretch, I never notice any real difference. At the moment, I walk a block before running, but I know last year I'd walk out my door to the nearest street (maybe half a block) and go. Never had any real injury that way either.
