No joke.....in the fall I was 5+ miles.... I'm back up to 4miles now...but soon enough my schedule calls for a 5 mile long run the first day...and increases by about a mile a week on the long run days.... Boo
Talk about pitty party...I have that bike ride to train for as well as the Marathon....We'll see how that goes, along with occupying my 5-yo son, work, and house maintenance...I think I'm pretty much going to have to run in the AM, and cycle in the PM.

I know last year when I was running every day, I felt so much better. When I skipped a day, I felt like crap. It was like my body yearned to be running.
What kind of pace are you running the 4 miles at? Imagine you're < 10 min/mi.
Sadly I bet I'm at more like 12 min/mi![]()
Brad
I'd say a 9:30 pace maybe....which isn't even all that fast. It's like 6.2mph or something.
I agree with feeling better when I run. I need to get out right after work and put down a few miles. We should have a thread where we post daily miles to keep each other motivated. LOL. They do that on the runnersworld forums.
It seems when I run outside, I usually budget half-hour for 3miles. I've never run a 10k, but I'd like to. Would be nice to finish in under an hour.

I'd love to be at 10 minutes.Last year I battled a lot of hip pain so the slower pace was basically necessary. Near the end of the year I found some stretches for my illiotibial band seemed to help keep the pain away.
I haven't experienced this pain yet.. but my fat ass still can't breath right if I go faster.![]()
Brad
Slow and steady then! Nothing wrong with that. I can run faster than Gabrielle (my Fiancee) due to my much longer legs, but she's got more endurance I think, as she takes the slow and steady route (probably 10 min. miles, shes not slow by any means)...But currently she's more committed to it...plus she plays soccer, and refereees soccer all week, so she gets lots of extra running in...

You can do it. Seriously. You'll be doing 5k distances in a few weeks. 80% of it is mental...IMO. The battle between "omg so tired, I'll just walk" and "don't give up, I can keep going" is in your head. Don't let the former win.
I find that it helps to distract myself. I think about lots of different things while running, or get into the music I'm listening to, or survey the neighborhood looking for new landscaping ideas, or being chased by a dog (as was the case last night. Although it was a puppy, and wasn't too threatening)...

I know exactly what you're talking about. Last year I kept that mentality and it really helped. And just like you, letting the mind wander is great. I stopped listening to music last year when I spent a lot of time running through subdivisions in my neighborhood because I wanted to hear traffic.
I've been running on a little paved trail in a park by my house that's a mile or maybe a bit more depending on how you attack it. When you don't have to think about dodging traffic or dogs, it really lets your mind wander. I think that's the key to getting back in the game.. then once you're up to speed, running isn't a chore at all.

Exactlyyyyyy...
When I first started running 3 years ago, I hadn't done ANYTHING since Highschool (football), which was 10 years. The Fiancee signed me up for the 5k Turkey Trot, and I had a month to get ready. The first time I went out, I think I made it a half a mile. The road around my apartment complex was exactly 1mile long, so I started with one lap, then two, and finally 3. In 4 weeks I went from zero to a 30min 5k in late November. And honestly it was a pride issue, I didn't want to be left in the dust by her...lol
I have a loooong way to go to get to 26 miles. But I think if you started now Brad, you'd be able to kill a half. Only 13.1miles. You've done a 5k in a very respectable time, I bet in a matter of 4 weeks you could put a hurtin' on a 10K if you wanted to.

Brad, the bike will help the running. Especially when you start pushing the pace. It won't help too much with speed, but it'll help some in endurance. Different muscles, but same lungs
I only ran a couple times (~3 miles each) all last year - but did about 1000 miles on the bike - and still did decently with my duathalon a couple weeks ago.
Most of the time I'm running with a jogging stroller and end up talk to my daughter - even though I probably look silly taking to a 16 month old who can't really hear me lol.
