    Hot Shit Blazer

Well, I'm posting this with risk to my reputation of not an idiot, but Its something I've been toying with for awhile, and its actually a fun little truck. Also, keep in mind that I don't do the details as cleanly with this truck, if you want to see that, go look at one of the other 2 projects I have on here.

Backstory; this is a 1991 4 door 4 wheel drive chevy blazer. It has 203,000 miles on the original 4.3 and trans. I bought this truck from a friend of mine, for the grand sum of 300 dollars + a set of sony 6x9's 3 years ago. I drove this truck to college everyday, and to work down in troy for a couple months before I bought my cobalt. This truck has never failed me, other than the one time I failed it, when I cut the power wire going to the starter and instead of replacing it or soldering it back together, I chose instead to epoxy it back together. It worked for about 2 months and then just stopped starting in an arbys parking lot in swartz creek. before my friend owned it, another friend of mine, paul tomas (fat paul) owned it, and he had gotten from his grandfather, who bought it new back in 91.

My goals for this truck are to make it into a trail rider. I'm not looking to mud it much, as I know I don;t have the power/lift/anything needed to do so. I want to be able to drive it up north, have some fun with it, and drive it back. Being able to go through peoples ditches, smash shopping carts, and cause general chaos is also something I would like to maintain. I have decided to do the things I want I need to do the following modifications:

trans cooler (so i don't overheat the trans when I get stuck)
2 inch lift on all corners
fix the pass front door so that it can open
    tires
oil pressure gauge (stock is bad)
    trans temp gauge
    locker
    rear recovery points
add additional vent hose so that I can drive through rivers/ponds and not flood the axles, and trans.
    exhaust
    lights, especially backup lights.

so far in the last couple weeks I've gotten tires (general grabber II's, 235/75/15) I've fixed the exhaust twice but its sense gotten ripped off by mudd and I finally lost it in a small lake. I got a set of hooks to use to rear recovery points from junk yard for 5 bucks. The front is lifted thanks to some torsion bar adjustments, and I bought a set of 2 inch lift shackles for the back off ebay for 45 bucks, but won't be here until later this week. I managed to fix the door tonight, but it was grusom. also replaced the front pass side brakes, as they were fucked.

    Pics!

hard to tell, but this is the front wheel well, I added a piece of rubber innertube using screws and washers, to help keep mud and water out of the engine bay. i also added a set of plug wires, as whenever they got wet Id loose the whole bank of cylinders, making if very difficult to flee private property

was given a set of lights, need to figure out where to put them

system I put together out of garbage I have collected over the years. decent system though really, first amp runs the 2 subs (older directed and W3) second runs all the component speakers. The ported box I made myself out of osb plywood and 2x4's that I found.

to fix the door I had to cut into the skin (from both sides) the mechanisom had gotten twisted over the years, and I had to bend some stuff back on the latch itself. after which, I pop riveted some of this aluminum over the huge hole that I had made. If you look closely you can see I did the same thing with the big hole farther down in the door (visible in previous photos), using a piece of metal that I obtained from making this hole, that one I sealed with gasket sealer, as the metal wasn't as conforming as the aluminum.

this I thought I would throw in, the grill got broken after I pushed a tree down that was in my path, and I fixed with tape.

after it gets hit with some grime, you'll never be able to tell the differance...

I buried it out in my field. I was driving here just after the 4 days rainstorm stopped, and I was doing well until my windshield got covered in mud and the windshield wipers stopped working (gotta add that to the list) and I idled into this mud hole. I made the mistake of trying to turn out of it, and then couldn't back up to try an get out. a jeep, and a chevy truck tried to come out and get me but got stuck before they made it to me, and we ended up pulling us all out with my fathers bulldozer. If you look you can see the jeep buried in the background

I'll try an keep this updated if anyone shows any interest.

Took it out a bit last night, had some. I'm having the exhaust put on it today while im at work, as well as the 65 buick special thats also on this site. I got the lights installed, but the mounts were a bit jacked from when the previous owner ripped them off his truck. They were free, so I can't complain.

that panel doesn't look so bad now...lol

seems as though I blew the front hub out, and cv axle is just spinning in the hub, and making some horrible noise. I'll take a look at it today or tomorrow and take some pics. Blew it out driving through a drainage channel, it was about 80 feet long, 1 foot deep water, with a mud basin, made it through all of that and at the end i got the front wheels up on dry land and it made it about halfway out and then that noise started. I would have taken some pics but it was dark out, and I was trespassing so I got it out before daybreak.

The trans cooler will not be getting any airflow when your stuck unless mounted by the fan. If your standing and its warm out (80+) it wont do any measurable good without airflow. Also if its covered in mud/dirt it won't exchange heat but rather bake itself into a clay oven. Just my .02 from installing mine.

Excited to see where this goes!

progress is slow, but I finished the trans mount last night. I have most parts, other than the fuel system and a few odds and ends. Should be big fun...

I'll prolly start collecting it later this month, I have alot of stuff ahead of me before that becomes an issue. I would like to get it though, I need the 2 deatschwerks pumps, the 105lb injectors, the line, and wiring setup, and the hardware to have it all sit in the tank. shouldn't be more than 850 bucks. I'll post some more pics tonight, with any luck the motor will be fully mounted in the truck by the end of tonight and then I can pull it back out and install the cam and other stuff. Could start on wiring after that....maybe filling that huge hole in the firewall.

so far no, he tinkered with the front mounts at first, he might today while I'm at work. he's retired and bored, so I'm not gonna stop him. The exhaust will happen as soon as the motors finshed being built and I can put it back in the truck. I'd like to get my hands on a torque converter before that so just it can be set in and done.

    Some progress has been had

Here is a pic of the cam and some of the parts I've been slowly collecting. I also have the wastegate and a plx wideband setup not pictured. I have most the gaskets, cam, springs, timing set, valve seals, camaro intake, shocks, lowering blocks, zq8 QR steering box, bw 4472 awd transfer case out of a scrapped typhoon, and a few other odds and ends. I still need quite a few parts, and I can't wait to dig in and get the exhaust made...next is to pull the motor out and start on the rebuild. I will prolly start in on the wiring harness while thats being done. The only machine work really being done is the milling and building of the heads for a set of cometic gaskets. Rat Tech will be doing the work, and I may have him do some port work while he's in there.

I thought this cam was note worthy

trans crossmember I made from some plate and pipe I bought off some country singers, it took alot of work to get it to fit around the torsion bars...

While I was at work today my dad finished the engine mounts which was very cool. he's retired, and bored, and it turns out he does good work. Heres some before and after on them, they need to be taken out and some finish work done, but they're basically done.

its amazing how far a sawzall and an arc wielder can get you...

you still got the flowmaster i gave you for this?

also have you thought about running a quicker ratio box like the typhoon in this? it would probably help sense you wanna try and rally it.
you can put a thirdgen steering box in it, 3rd gens have a closer ratio box.
