    THE HATE MOVEMENT

Tandem build thread. Deal with it.

Subaru got played out, so now we're on Toyota's dick. Give it until next summer and this shit will be cool.

    Prelude: The MX83.

    November, 2011

Here I am, driving my new piece of shit home.

I was browsing Craigslist, and found an X8 Cressida listed at $900 firm. Theft recovery, all of the lock cylinders are punched out. Sold as-is, non running, because the owner changed the battery and tripped the factory alarm, which prevents the car from starting unless you lock the passenger door with the key. Since the tumblers were obliterated by some crackhead with a hammer and screwdriver looking for the compact spare or change or something, this means that once the alarm is started, you just aren't allowed to start the car ever.

According to the internet, all you have to do is unplug the hood latch sensor and it will trick the alarm into letting the car start. Armed with that knowledge, I called up Steven and made him drive me out the next morning to the middle of fucking nowhere with $600 in my pocket. To my dismay, when I got there, I saw that the hood latch was already unplugged, and the car still wouldn't start. Luckily, the owner had already pulled the door panels off to try and get the locks to move. I borrowed a piece of wire from him to jumper some wires going to the passenger lock, and after a little poking around I shorted the correct wires to get the locks to open. We jumped the car, and it started right up. After a two minute drive to make sure that the car would make it up to at least 60, I handed the guy my $600 lowball, and drove that bitch home, despite some worrying oil smoke on startup, and an annoying tendency for the oil pressure idiot light to flicker at idle.

89k miles. Power everything, and everything still works. And by everything, I mean everything except for overdrive. And shifting in general, sometimes.

In case you don't know what a 7M looks like, here's a picture. Fuck hood struts.

Here's me, feeling like a bauss with my $600 family sedan.

Tried to start chipping away at the eighth inch of grime covering the engine bay the day after I got the car.

Got this far, then quit fucking with it.

A week or so later, I stole winter rimz from Noah's Ark / blue2forty... at this point, the tread on the left rear tire is considerably lower than what's pictured here

Obligitory I's and 1's plate, obligitory bosozoku posing with the bent plate.

We wanted to open an account at Motovicity, so we bought a whole bunch of bullshit. I don't know how soon it's going on, but it's going on eventually.

Sometimes we get bored, so we buy stupid shit from Motovicity. Here we are on I75 south in Steve's great aunt's Accord.

Why'd we make the drive? The Cressida had a light out, and I found that PIAA makes cheap LED's and Moto had some in stock.

    Before and after.

Dim single LED's make the plate even more difficult to read.

    Part 2: Surprise JZS160

Meanwhile, Steven has been saving up for a 1JZ and R154 swap for his JZZ30 SC300. This means fewer stupid impulse buys than usual, but he still managed to pick up this Grip Royal wheel and Works Bell hub.

Looks fantastic installed... compliments the stock wood trim and the wood shifter handcrafted by our own blogger Patrick Brautigan very nicely.

The plan was, Steven would buy a 1JZ and R154 swap for the Z30, we'd pull the stock 2JZGE and W58, and I'd buy that setup from him for around $1k, then I'd piece together engine management and a turbo kit for it over winter. Only problem was, I'd need to source a front sump oil pan assembly to clear the crossmember in my X8. Motherfuckers want crazy money for them online, so my best bet was going to be getting a fucked up high mileage GS300 motor from a junkyard for $300, pulling the sump off it, and keeping the block as a spare. In the process of looking for a GS motor, we found a '98 GS300 (JZS160) being parted out on craigslist. After some creative bargaining techniques on my part, we had the guy down to $800... For the entire car.

In case you know... Steven doesn't fuck around. After getting the car, we trailered it straight to the quarter car wash, sprayed the bay out, took it to his house, pushed it into his garage, and started pulling the motor.

The next day, we woke up, went to work at his mom's pizzaria, finished our shift at 9, went straight to his house, and finished yanking that bitch. Since we didn't have any room to keep the motor in his garage between the JZS160, S13, and S14.5, we threw it in the back of the Romano's transit van, drove to my house, and stayed up until 3AM moving shit around in my garage and getting the 2JZ out of the van.

As soon as we track down a JZS161 Aristo 2JZGTE engine and trans, we're getting it and dropping it into the JZS160 immediately. Steve just needs to figure out an intercooler core and piping, since this isn't the most common swap in the US.

My facial hair could use it's own build thread... ditched the mustache for a little bit.

Here are what Pioneer crossovers and tweeters look like sitting on my desk:

Surprisingly, 6.5" woofers had no trouble fitting in the stock mounts and clearing the window regulator... the door panels are a different story, though.

This is a picture I just found of Steve spraying out the bay on the GS. It looked grimey as fuck before we did this, but after a quick spray it was spotless. Incredible for a 220k mile car.

I still have a few more photos to process and upload, and then Steve has a ton of photos on his camera that he'll get to uploading in the next few days.

Steven was thinking about LS1 swapping the S14.5, then he realised this shit is a way better waste of money. I was thinking about 1UZ swapping the X8, but then I realised 2J > *

After working for 3 hours, we were like FUCK WHY HAVEN'T WE BEEN TAKING PICTURES OF EVERYTHING... so we have several pics of the GS in this stage of disassembly, nothing before, and not much after.

Here's the 2JZ as it sits now. Waiting on a special tool to take the head bolts off, then I get to see how fucked the headgasket is, and I can take the head somewhere and have it measured to see if it's warped from being overheated.

But for real. LS1's are expensive as fuck, and so are their transmissions. Hell, there's not even really a decent 5-speed that bolts to a small block chevy, is there? Doesn't make sense to chuck that kind of loot on a swap unless you're going pro bro and blowing up a high dollar SR build every season, and even then, it doesn't make sense because it's made every single US drift event sound like NASCAR.

just for the record, this is a h8mvmt thread.... if I bait you like that, you're allowed to tell me I'm a stupid fuck, and how I could have gotten a vortec for cheap and T56's aren't even that expensive if you know where to look...

it's constructive criticism. haters make me famous.

...and steve still wants to put a smallblock chevy into something.

There's a trick to being whatever you want to be in life.
It starts with the simple belief that you are what or who you say you are. It starts, like all faiths, with a belief-a belief predicated more on whimsy than reality. And you've gotta believe for everybody else, too - until you can show them proof. If you're lucky, someone starts believing with you - first theoretically, then in practice. And two people believing are the start of a congregation. You build a congregation of believers and eventually you set out to craft a cathedral. Sometimes it's just a church; sometimes it turns out to be a chapel. Folks who don't build churches will try to tell you how you're doing it wrong, even as your steeple breaks the clouds. Never listen.- From TOUGH SHIT
