    Formula owners, I have questions.

Not sure how many of you own a formula car, but i've been seriously thinking about buying a Formula Mazda. From what I hear they're relatively cheap to maintain, ungodly fast, and it'll teach you more about driving than any street car ever would.
What are the benefits and disadvantages? I guess the biggest one would be truck/trailer.. but how's maintenance, are there open track day options? Overall cost per weekend?

I'm far from an expert on such things, but if I were going road racing, I'd pick a class with large field. It's no fun driving around not actually racing anyone.

10 seconds of research and looks like a complete FM is around $20k. Sounds like a lot of race car for $20k. Maybe you can attend a race weekend and talk to a few FM owners and watch them run?

The F500 guys usually say around $1000 per race weekend. But F500 tires are cheap.

How about one of these? They're local too.

Formula Ford is a better option IMO for this area.

Most organizations that hold OTD's don't allow formula cars. Too small and Too fast to run with the fendered cars. When waterford organizes an OTD, they sometimes have an open wheeled group if they have enough interest.
