1992 Ford Probe GL Aeromodded Beater

    PRICE REDUCED to $500

Runs and drives but battery is not charging properly.

I bought this from a friend in August 2011 as a winter beater and made aerodynamic modifications which in conjunction with driving techniques raised the fuel economy from EPA 24 combined to a current 40.79 MPG lifetime average. That's a 70% increase. I have at one point gone 500 miles with only 12 gallons in this car.

It was good to me until it failed to start back in late November. I went off to winter break and installed a rebuilt alternator with the help of chewie. At that time it gained an Optima battery courtesy of Linkster to get me home (since the old battery was drained).

The morning after the alternator job the car refused to even turn over. I followed the PO's advice of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and it worked fine. We think the computer needed to be reset or something. This only happened once. I then drove it on and off for a couple weeks and the battery ran out on i75 last Saturday. It was towed back to Detroit and when I put a charger on it, it started and drove like normal.

Chewie and Link came down and we put a volt meter on it. The alternator charges for the first few minutes, then shuts off for good. The battery holds a good 15V when the alt is working. Chewie thinks there's a problem in the harness.

I'm in my last semester at CCS and don't have the time or patience to mess around with this thing out in the cold.

    Stats:
    1992 Ford Probe GL
    Mazda 2.2L 12V F2 engine
5 speed manual transmission with a good clutch
Dark red with spray painted "art" by moi

Modifications: (The aero mods are durable corrugated plastic, NOT cardboard)
Ignition Control Module from a Chevy pickup (works fine)
partial belly pans, front and rear
    grille blocks
    flat wheel covers
    front air dam
    front wheel flares
    side mirrors deleted
    wide angle interior mirror
    some panel gaps taped
    rear wheel skirts
antenna moved to interior (AM doesn't work anymore)
    rear seat delete
    all rear interior panels removed
    pass. headlight permanently down
    rear seatbelts and retractors removed

    Pros:
If you fix the charging it's a very reliable car.
    Gets lots of looks
40 MPG (Best tank of 44.68mpg)
Loads of storage space. Cargo area large enough to sleep in (I talk from experience)
    Cheap
    AM/FM radio
    Makes girls wet

    Cons:
Alternator does not charge battery correctly
    Rusty
    NEEDS rear brake pads
Rear tires are getting worn down
At over half a tank the interior smells like gas. I haven't seen drips under the car.
Headlight linkages seized. I put them up/down manually
    Left turn signal broken

    Car comes with:
    Appropriate Haynes manual
    Rear interior panels
-Rear seat, speakers, rear carpet and two panels are in MN but I can get them here over spring break if you want them.
Plywood cargo bay with cutout for removing the spare, and large mat so things don't slide around
Good Optima battery with new cable terminals
    Rebuilt Alternator, one month old
New fuel pump from RockAuto (uninstalled)
    Space saver spare
All the aerodynamics and hypermiling tips you want
Plans to paint the passenger side matching.
    Drivers side mirror
    New uninstalled turn signal switch
    Backstreet Boyz cassette tape

Honey badger don't give a shit.

    BEFORE paint, showing the mods

Asking $500 OBO or trade for a hardtail mountain bike plus cash (or a moped??)
Make me a reasonable offer. It costs me nothing to let this thing sit in the garage.

It really runs and drives fine except for the charging issue. (And brake pads lol) It took me to GR and Houghton Lake with no issue. And from MN to Detroit in September.

I'm going to punch you in the dick for selling this car. Seriously. I know we'll talk about it later, but I will punch you in the dick, because I love you.

It's pretty fun and unlike racing, you can legally practice on your daily commute

The buyer flaked so the car is back up for sale. After an overnight trickle charge on the battery I took it for a drive around the neighborhood and it works great.

    Edit:
I've decided to just call it an alternator delete and manually charge the battery every week or so (I don't drive much).

The car is no longer for sale
unless you make me a great offer.

If this thing worked great with good brakes, halfway decent tires and a good alternator I would buy this! I love it!
